After the unexpected departure of Mariusz Staszewski from ARGED MALESA Ostrów Wlkp., Kamil Brzozowski has become the new coach of the team, having previously worked with the youth at the Ostrów club. In our conversation, he explains how this came about and what plans and goals his team has for the coming months.

  • Kamil Brzozowski has been working at ARGED MALESA Ostrów Wlkp. for three years now. The former speedway rider also represented this club in 2014, 2017, and 2018.
  • Along with Brzozowski, Stanisław Chomski has joined the team’s staff, serving as an assistant coach.
  • I will try to put all my heart into making everything go according to plan – says the new Ostrów coach.

Marcin Rusewicz (ekstraliga.pl): How did it actually happen that you became the head coach of the first team? Was it your initiative or President Waldemar Górski’s?

Kamil Brzozowski (ARGED MALESA Ostrów Wlkp. coach): We all at the club were preparing for the next season, as usual. I was supposed to work with the youth, but it turned out that coach Mariusz Staszewski resigned because, as he said in interviews, something burned out and he needed a change of environment. This all happened during the Christmas holidays, so you could say I didn’t have them at all because I was on the phone the whole time.

Before, I tried to avoid this role and grow into it, but I made a few phone calls to older and more experienced coaches to ask how it works. Coach Mariusz Staszewski encouraged me to accept the challenge. Hence, the support of Stanisław Chomski, because I wanted to have support that I would definitely need.

Will you combine the duties of the first team’s coach with working with the youth, or will you now dedicate yourself one hundred percent to the new role?

I will normally be doing training on the big track and with youth competitions, so I will continue with these duties, but we will be looking for someone for our boys. We probably have one of the largest speedway schools in Poland, up to thirty-six students, so we will need help for these younger riders who train on minitracks and pitbikes.

In the coming season, you will be assisted by Stanisław Chomski. What will his advisory role entail?

The plan is that if I need him, and I will at least during these first March trainings or sparring sessions, Coach Chomski will help me.

Was it difficult to persuade him to cooperate?

At the very beginning, I made a call to ask if he would help me with phone support or if he could watch for my mistakes, which are more visible on TV, but then we moved a bit forward. Obviously, he needed a moment to think and immediately stated that he didn’t want to be a decision-maker, and whether I use the advice or not is up to me.

You recently announced that you’re collaborating with Ashley Holloway. What will this cooperation involve?

The club has long had a very good relationship with Flemming Graversen, but we wanted each of these four young boys who will be selected for the league team to have another engine to try out because, as is known, speedway largely depends on equipment. We called and asked if it’s possible, and Ashley said of course. Moreover, if there is a need and if he has time, he will visit us in Ostrów for some training sessions to observe and suggest.

How are the team’s preparations for the upcoming season going? Does the club still plan to organize a camp?

From Monday to Friday, we have activities in the gym or on the fitness center. There are many boys, and now I’m alone, but we are divided into three groups, so there is a lot to do with them. It’s known that the older ones are more advanced and know what to do and how to prepare because they know it’s essential. Regarding a camp, we have already been in the mountains with the youngest, and the first team has a small camp planned at the turn of February and March here in Ostrów.

How do you assess your schedule for the 2025 season? You start with a match against CELLFAST WILKI Krosno, then face AUTONA UNIA Tarnów and TEXOM STAL Rzeszów. Could it be better, or is it not so bad?

Everything depends on that first match, which will certainly be very difficult, as METALKAS 2. Ekstraliga is strengthening every year, and the names competing in it are very strong. As we analyzed with the staff, it would be good for us to play the inaugural match in our favor.

What team result at the end of the season would make you satisfied?

We now have a division into the upper and lower four, and it would be better to be in those upper parts of the playoffs. That is the goal we have set, and if we achieve it, we will be very satisfied.

What do you wish for yourself in this debut season?

That everything will work out as I have quietly planned, namely to be in that first four. I have been practically living in Ostrów for three years now, being available to the riders and the club, so I will try to put all my heart into everything going according to plan, but of course, not everything depends on me.
