First SoN, then SGP again in Toruń!
07.01.2025 13:23This year, the Motoarena will host the Speedway of Nations, and in 2026, the Speedway Grand Prix will return.
The decision, accompanied by the Mayor of Toruń, Paweł Gulewski, was announced by the owner of the Toruń Sports Club, Przemysław Termiński, as reported on the website torun.pl.
– Speedway sports in Toruń play a special role and I won’t hesitate to say that we are the biggest sports club in Toruń, if not in the whole region. This applies to both the budget, viewership, and the number of fans at the stadium. We also have a large group of sponsors. Our main partner is the city of Toruń. Without this cooperation, let’s be honest, speedway at the extraleague level in Toruń would not be possible. – says Przemysław Termiński. – In 2025, Toruń will host the Speedway of Nations, essentially a kind of team world championship. There will be four tournaments, including a semi-final and final. Then, according to the agreement with Discovery Sport Events, over the next four years, from 2026 to 2029, there will be four final rounds of the Speedway Grand Prix.
– I confirm that the city will be a solid partner for the club, regardless of the agreements and letters of intent signed with partners from DSE. We will try to be reliable partners in terms of logistics cooperation but also in financial matters. – emphasizes Paweł Gulewski, Mayor of Toruń and adds that the Motoarena, where speedway competitions are held, will undergo significant modernization works. – For the year 2025, the Municipality of Toruń has reserved an amount that has not been done so far, considering the funds for the maintenance of this facility, it’s 1 million 50 thousand PLN. This is also related to the fact that our partners from the club reported during the concluded season the need for modernization of the stands, particularly in terms of expanding luxury boxes. All this to meet league requirements. I also had a good conversation with President Stępniewski, he confirmed that these modernization expenses for extending and modernizing media spaces, monitoring services during races, and also VIP boxes must be realized. And this is a precondition for entering speedway competitions in 2026. For 2026, in continuation of works related to the extension of the stands, we estimate to allocate 700 thousand PLN from the city budget.
The Speedway Grand Prix at Motoarena Toruń named after Marian Rose has been held since 2010. From 2010 to 2021, the Municipality of Toruń had a contract for organizing SGP with the British company BSI Ltd. Meanwhile, from 2022 to 2023, the Municipality had a contract for organizing SGP with Discovery Sports Events. Based on it, the events were conducted: SGP (2022, 23) and SGP 2 (junior world championships up to 21 years – 2022). For the 2024 season, the Toruń Sports Club signed a contract with DSE for organizing SGP and SGP 2.
Meanwhile, the Speedway of Nations is a relatively new series that replaced the World Team Cup in 2018. The competition is conducted in a two-pair system. The SoN series competitions involve 15 three-member teams: seven in the first semi-final and seven in the second semi-final (the host has ensured participation in the final). The two best teams from each semi-final and the winner of the third and fourth-place playoff advance to the final. In the SoN series events held so far, the Polish team has never won

During today’s (07.01.2025) meeting with the media, Przemysław Termiński also announced that the Toruń Sports Club is moving its offices back to the Motoarena.
It’s worth noting that in 2025, the city’s budget allocations for sports increased by 20% – from 51.8 million PLN to 62 million PLN, including an increase in funds allocated for club subsidies by 19% from the current 16.2 million PLN to 19.2 million PLN. The budget also includes funds of 5 million PLN gross for replacement investments in TIS (initially, it was 2 million, increased by 3 million PLN after an adjustment), which include the replacement of the athletic track in the sports and entertainment hall and adapting the hall for the Indoor World Athletics Championships in 2026. About 15.318 million PLN gross is needed for the adaptation – 5 million PLN comes from GMT funds, and talks are underway to include the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship government and funds from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism.
